Silicon Valley is discussing the impact of emerging technologies on the future, while Wall Street is already embracing the new economy. One fund focusing on investing in robotics and artificial intelligence technology companies has seen gains three times higher than human expectations this year.<\/p>\n
Since the beginning of this year, the fund company Global X Funds has launched the Global Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (ticker: BOTZ), traded on the Nasdaq. It has risen about 30% year-to-date, while the century-old Dow Jones Industrial Average has gained just over 9%, the S&P 500 nearly 11%, and the Nasdaq nearly 20%.<\/p>\n
BOTZ was established in September 2016. According to Global X Funds, the ETF seeks to invest in companies that may benefit from the increased adoption of robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, including industrial and non-industrial robotics, automation, autonomous vehicles, and related companies.<\/p>\n
Many of the companies BOTZ invests in are not based in the U.S. Among the 29 stocks it tracks, Japanese companies account for nearly half, followed by companies from Switzerland and the U.S. Meanwhile, ROBO Global, an asset management company that compiles the Global Professional Robotics and Automation Index, does not have a single ETF investment located in the U.S.<\/p>\n
Jack Ablin, Chief Investment Officer of BMO Private Bank, commented on BOTZ, saying, \"From a thematic perspective, it's definitely a combination of tech and international risk exposure.\"<\/p>\n
William Studebaker, President and Chief Investment Officer of ROBO Global, compared emerging technologies like AI to the tech giants that saw significant gains in the U.S. stock market this year \u2014 the so-called FANG stocks (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Google's parent company Alphabet).<\/p>\n
Studebaker told CNBC, \"Robotics, automation, and AI (RAAI) really are the next FANG trade. The four FANG companies are actually transforming their own businesses and investing in AI-related companies.\"<\/p>\n
Studebaker noted that many of the companies his firm is heavily invested in have either not seen widespread pullbacks on Wall Street or are not yet well-covered. \"This is an industry that is still evolving, and it is going to explode,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Public data shows that BOTZ's top holdings include Intuitive Surgical, a U.S.-based surgical robotics system manufacturer for which Goldman Sachs set a $1,000 price target in May; U.S. graphics processor maker Nvidia; Japan's Mitsubishi Electric; and industrial automation sensor maker Keyence.<\/p>\n
ROBO Global's top holdings include Swiss automation technology company ABB, Chinese automation technology company Hesai, and U.S. healthcare equipment manufacturer Accuray.<\/p>\n
